Road Bikes

Road bikes are some of the lightest, fastest and smoothest bikes on the market which can easily achieve break-neck speeds on even the slightest downhill incline. They can be made from a wide variety of materials from boron to aluminum to magnesium to carbon fiber and almost any light and strong material or alloy in between.

Road bikes have a similar frame geometry that sits the rider low on the bike giving them the least amount of wind resistance which increases their speed. This is why road bikers often travel in packs closely following the lead rider. The gears are oriented for high speed as opposed to steep climbs which are more common on back country trails.

Road bikes have very skinny tires with very little tread to lower road resistance as well as wind resistance. Typically they are 24-26 inches, but 29 inch wheels are popular among larger riders or those looking for the highest speeds. There are usually at least 18 gears which can progress up to a rare 35 gear version which is more commonly found on mountain bikes.
